In 1989 he was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings and began his twenty season run with the NHL in the 1991-92 season. He was the first European Captain to win the Stanley Cup. He was captain of the Red Wings for his last six seasons. Although he considered retirement in 2010, he ended up signing for another season with the Red Wings.
