Boom! Legendary sportscaster John Madden has a surprisingly high personal net worth. While he may have been a professional football coach for nearly a decade, and a nationally televised sportscaster for twice as long (1979-2009), that still doesn’t explain how he has been able to build such an impressive fortune. After all, at the peak of his broadcasting career Madden was earning only $5 million dollars a year. A nice sum but not nearly enough to explain his otherworldly riches. The reason Madden is able to drive around the country in a solid gold bus built for an emperor (he is deathly afraid of flying) is because of a little video game franchise put out by EA Sports called Madden NFL. Madden NFL debuted in 1989 and every year since snowballed in popularity to become an absolute video game powerhouse with over 43 million copies of the game sold.
In 2005 EA Sports signed a deal to become the exclusive game for the NFL through the year 2012. The deal was reportedly worth over $300 million. After rumors began to spring up that EA would be dropping the name “Madden” from the game it was announced that Mr. Madden himself had signed a multi-year licensing deal which would allow his likeness and name to be used in the games for the next 10 years. The deal was reportedly worth $150 million.
